Nick Jardine, Toys of Doom
Real Name: Nicholas Jardine
Identity/Class: Human technology user
Occupation: School boy, criminal
Enemies: The police
Known Relatives: Henry Jardine (a.k.a The Toymaker, grandfather, deceased)
Base of Operations: U.K.
First Appearance: Eagle (1989)
History: Thirteen year old orphan Nick Jardine discovers the last resting place of his evil great-grandfather, and discovers that he had invented the incredible Toys of Doom, miniature remote controlled vehicles armed with real weapons. using them he goes of on a spree of robberies and mayhem.
Powers/Abilities: The Toys of Doom seem to consist of one armed helicopter and a miniature tank. Where the ammunition for the vehicles comes from, and how Nick is meant to keep them loaded, doesn't seem to be mentioned.
Comments: This is a continuation from the original Toys of Doom strip in Buster in 1966 (When I first heard about it, I thought it was a reprint, but it's not - the story is new). Newer information now lets me know that the Toys of Doom strip in Buster (with the Toymaker) was reprinted as Threat of the Toymaker (with Dr Droll) in Smash and then again (with at least some new artwork) as The Terror Toys (with the Terror Toymaker) in Jackpot, with one last reprint of the original strip, back at home in Buster but under the title of The Terror Toys in 1986. Then a new story was created as a continuation as the Toys of Doom (with Nick Jardine, great-grandson of the the Toymaker) in EAGLE in 1989. Confused? You will be.
VERY similar premise to General Jumbo, except that he is a hero where as Nick Jardine is most definitely not - in one of his first robberies he seriously considers killing a shop owner to prevent the man from identifying him later.
Jim Croasdale thinks the artist who drew this strip might have been Solano Lopez.
