History: Like his contemporary Santo, Blue Demon (Blue to his friends) spent his time out of the ring tracking down monsters and rescuing people from the zombies, vampires and mad scientists who plague modern  day Mexico.

Comments: In real life Moreno was the son of a farmer, who initially worked on the railroads before being brought into the world of wrestling under the tutelage of a famous wrestler. He began wrestling without a mask, but within a few months created the persona of Blue Demon, initially a bad guy who teamed up with "The Black Shadow" (another wrestler) to form Los Hermanos Shadow (The Shadow Brothers). Four years later Santo managed to defeat and unmask The Black Shadow in the ring. Moreno turned his character into a good guy, and shortly thereafter defeated publically bested Santo in a couple of matches, sparking a bitter rivalry that would carry on for years.

Like Santo, Blue Demon starred in a number of films, some of them alongside his rival. He was also seen to lead a group of Luchadores Enmascarados in three of the films, The Champions of Justice, consisting of Mil Mascaras, Tinieblas, el Rayo de Jalisco (The Lightning Bolt from Jalisco*), el Medico Asesino (The Medic Assassin), el Fantasma Blanco (The White Ghost), Superzan and his old teammate The Black Shadow. As well as his 25 or so films, he also had his own comic in the 1970's.

He retired in 1988, but again like Santo, his son has carried on the tradition as Blue Demon Jr. Alexander Moreno died from a heart attack in the year 2000, at the age of 78. He was buried wearing his mask, which he had never taken off in public.

* Jalisco is a State in southern Mexico. Thanks to Oscar Olivarez for translating both this name and el Medico Asesino's for me, and Marcelino Garza Jr for clarifying that "the Ray from Jalisco" more accurately would be "the Lighting Bolt from Jalisco".

Jair Guerrero has written in to share his recollection of one of Blue Demon's movies - from the description, it may well be his first starring appearance: "In the 60's or 70's years, Blue Demon appears in a movie as El Santo's foe, kidnapping a lady at a Lucha Libre event, and says that he comes from the Hell to challenge El Santo, who is wrestling in that event. Later Demon brings his hostage to Hell's Gate in where he wait for Santo. Several bad fighting sequences later, El Santo finally arrives and starts to fight against Blue Demon. In the end El Santo defeats Blue Demon and he returns to the Hell."
