Comments: Adventure began publication as a "story paper," featuring prose tales with intermittent illustrations. When Adventure launched, its principle rivals were school-themed story papers like Gem and Magnet, but Adventure struck a chord with readers, with commensurately strong sales. Inevitably, this meant that D.C. Thomson sought to reproduce that success, and Adventure became the first of what was eventually dubbed "the Big Five," a quintet of adventure-themed story papers published by D.C. Thomson; the others were The Rover and The Wizard, which both launched in the year after Adventure in 1922, The Skipper which began in 1930, and The Hotspur, starting in 1933.
