History: (The Empress of Othernow) When a Cyberman timeship strikes the TARDIS in the vortex and crashes to Earth in 9AD, it sets in motion a chain of events which leads to the Roman Empire conquering the world. Arriving in 1969, the Doctor and his companion Gwen discover the alterations to history, and return to 9 AD, where they set time back on it's proper course.

(The Sleepers in the Marsh) The Doctor is confronted by smugglers and Sea Devils on the south coast of England in the eighteenth century...

Comments: The Doctor was played by Rob Pugh. Photos from the show are copyright Peter Vialls, and used with permission. Check out his page on the play.

In 1994, Huntingdon Drama Club enjoyed it's 50th Anniversary, and put on a number of plays to celebrate this fact. One such play was The Empress of Othernow. Click the link on the History section for further information about the background to the play, as this page is really meant to be about the version of the Doctor seen in the play. Empress of Othernow was granted BBC approval to use the Doctor, TARDIS, and some of his foes (which is why this apocryphal fan-produced Doctor is included on my site while legions of others aren't.)

The Gwen who accompanies this incarnation is a historian from the 21st century. There is another companion, Guin, short for Guinevere Winchester, introduced in Short Trips and Side Steps in March 2000, who accompanies the red-haired Merlin Doctor (young Muldwych). That Guin is an academic who worked at a museum for 25 years prior to meeting the Doctor. Although I'm sure the latter author didn't plan the idea, other than possible age differences (and name spellings, which is minor), there would be no reason to consider this a different person. If we take it that the two Gwens are one and the same, then this would probably mark the Othernow Doctor as the incarnation prior to Muldwych, and Gwen/Guin as the companion who bridges the regeneration.
