Lead

Real Name: Lead

Identity/Class: Unknown

Occupation: Specialist (probably)

Affiliations: Gold, Copper, Jet, Diamond, Radium, Sapphire, Silver, Steel, Mercury, Bronze, presumably the other "elements"

Enemies: The entity from within time.

Known Relatives: None

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Unknown

First Appearance: Sapphire and Steel Adventure 1, Episode 4 (ITC, 19th July 1979)

Powers/Abilities: Superhuman strength. Able to act as insulation for Steel when that agent had reduced his temperature. It's likely that he had the following abilities displayed by all the other agents we saw, though he himself did not demonstrate them: ability to teleport (generally to and from missions, not once he is at the site of an investigation); able to communicate telepathically with other agents. He probably has a greatly extended lifespan by human terms. Since it is implied that other "elements" can tap his powers telepathically when needed, it seems likely the reverse might be true; e.g. he might be able to call on limited versions of the powers displayed by Steel for instance.

History: Lead was an agent of an unknown force, who worked to preserve the fabric of time from anything which might threaten it. His origins were unknown, and though he appeared humanoid, he was definitely not from Earth. He presumably worked with a number of other agents during his career, but the only recorded instances were alongside fellow agent Steel and his partner Sapphire. Comments he made suggested Lead himself normally partnered with Jet on missions.

(Adventure 1 (fb) - BTS) In November or early December 1872 (Earth reckoning), Lead helped Sapphire and Steel deal with a time creature which was loose on the sailing ship Marie Celeste. The being had been set free from time by an out of date ship's log, and though not sentient, it was powerful; in order to stop it, the agents sank the ship, leaving behind a crewless replica (presumably to ensure the locals didn't go looking for the real one and perhaps free the creature once more).

(Adventure 1) When the parents of a family living in a remote cottage vanished, Sapphire and Steel investigated. They discovered that a mix of items from different eras had helped trigger the release of another creature from within the time corridor, this time a sentient one. After Steel made an abortive attempt to destroy the creature by freezing down the temperature, which only resulted in leaving him badly weakened, Lead was assigned to join them. He helped heat Steel back up, then the three agents managed to corner the creature, and locate its focus point. With his help, Steel reduced his temperature again, this time without ill effect, and successfully froze it within the cottage's cornerstone. Lead then crushed that stone to dust, eliminating it.

(Adventure 6) Sapphire and Steel, having angered a "higher power" by refusing to serve them, were targeted and trapped outside of time. A line of dialogue suggested that Lead might have suffered a similar fate.
