History: In 1770, after his fiancee, Lucy Wharton, was murdered by Peter Bradford, a jealous rival for her affections, wealthy Philadelphian socialite Dan Brand pursued the killer into the western wilderness, only to nearly be slain by a grizzly bear. He was saved by the Catawbas, a local Native American tribe, and their chief, Great Deer, and Great Deer's son, Tipi, taught the townsman Brand how to survive in the forest and to fight with their weapons. After a year Brand had become almost as proficient as his tutors, but he remained intent on hunting down Bradford. However, before he could recommence his quest for vengeance, the Catawbas were attacked by rival Chippewas, who Great Deer confirmed had been stirred up by an unidentified white man who had sold them alcohol and stirred them to war so he could sell them guns and ammunition. Brand fought bravely alongside his friends against the Chippewas, but as the tide turned in the Catawbas' favour, Bradford, revealing himself to be behind the Chippewa attack, shot dead Great Deer. The elderly chief died in Brand's arms, requesting that Brand avenge him and take care of Tipi. With Tipi's aid, Brand slew Bradford, and with nothing in Philadelphia to go back to, Brand decided to stay in the wilderness and forge a new life there.
