First Appearance: Spirit newspaper strip #1 (Register and Tribune Syndicate, June 2nd 1940)

Powers/Abilities: None, but he's smart, tenacious and a capable fighter.

History: Denny Colt was a criminologist and sometimes assistant to Central City's Police Commissioner Dolan. This alliance was not without risk, and during an encounter with master criminal "the Octopus", Denny was injured and believed dead. Feeling that he could turn this mistaken assumption to his advantage, Denny assumed the identity of the Spirit, a mysterious crimefighter disguised by a domino mask.

In the original version of his origin, the Octopus was Dr Cobra, a different master criminal.

Sam Jones played the Spirit in the 1987 TV movie version, while Gabriel Macht played Colt in the 2008 movie version, which was directed by Frank Miller.
