Phantom of the East

Real Name: Char Chapman

Identity/Class: Normal human

Occupation: Hunter

Affiliations: Unknown

Enemies: Kano the Witch Doctor, Vulcan, the Sun Mistress

Known Relatives: None

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: The Pacific Rim

First Appearance: Char Chapman: The Phantom of the East

Powers/Abilities: Skilled fighter, with above average strength and agility. His senses are superhumanly acute, something he claims is simply down to having spent so much time in the jungle that it has sharpened his perceptions.

History: Char Chapman was a hero who travelled the world, often adventuring in jungles and other exotic locations. When crime needs to be fought, he dons a mask and becomes the Phantom of the East.

Comments: Thanks to Dansen T.Stahl who provided the following information, gleaned from an old fan magazine "Rocket Blast Comi-Collector".

"Costume: Jodhapur pants. Tall leather boots. Pistol holster on belt. Domino mask. Headband, tied around head with ends trailing down to waist. No shirt. "Claw slash" tattoo on chest. Char Chapman, known as "the Phantom of the East", appeared in his own title. His costume consisted of green goggles, head band, boots and belt, brown jodphers. On the cover, he had a red shirt, in his stories, he was bare chested and had a tattoo {three-clawed}. His artist was Kev Haracre and his alter ego was famed hunter-guide of the same name. Action took place in the jungles. There were two stories in issue #19 from which these panels were taken. He apparently had no super powers and relied on superior strength and agility." The original contributors to the magazine with this information were John Ryan and Howard P. Siegel. It should be noted that the above description is slightly inaccurate - a review of the first issue's art shows that he is wearing a shirt as the Phantom (you can see the lines at the neck and wrists where the shirt ends), and that the "tattoo" is simply an emblem on the shirt (it is absent when he is later stripped of the shirt when he is captured).
