History: Billy Joe was a dangerous criminal based in a desert called Big Dusty on the planet Paprika, a small, windswept backwater in the Spice System, out in the far reaches of man's space exploration. Johnny Alpha came to Paprika hunting a bounty, and was sent by the local law after Billy Joe in an attempt to send him to his death. Unknown to Alpha and his partner Wulf, Billy Joe had a penchant for killing Strontium Dogs.
Billy Joe's men overpowered the two bounty hunters, and he challenged Alpha to a las-whip match to the death. Alpha, unused to the weapon, lost the duel, and was pronounced dead when his heart stopped. But he had fooled his opponent, as Alpha had trained himself to perform this trick as a last ditch gambit, and after Billy Joe and his gang departed, Johnny's partner Wulf revived him. While Alpha healed from his injuries, he also trained in the use of the las-whip under the tutelage of alien circus owner Jubal.
Lured out of hiding for a rematch, Billy Joe didn't find things so easy the second time round. The battle moved onto the top of the cages holding the deadly alien animals, and Alpha cut away the bars under Billy Joe, allowing him to fall into the cage holding the Smiling Chukwalla, a carnivorous monster that had him for dinner.
