Atom the Cat

Real Name: Unrevealed

Identity/Class: Anthropomorphic cat mutate

Occupation: Superhero

Affiliations: Professor Testtube, Cora, Cuckoo Cat

Enemies: Boston Bulldozer, Long John

Known Relatives: None

Aliases: None

Base of Operations: Catville

First Appearance: Atom the Cat #9 (Charlton Comics, October 1957)

Powers/Abilities: Superhuman strength and durability. Able to fly. His powers fade gradually if he doesn't fish, but are instantly restored to full strength once he eats again.

History: Seeking somewhere warm to sleep off a meal, an unidentified alley cat wandered through the open door of a laboratory, unaware that the scientists working there had just fled in terror after accidentally unleashing a flood of atomic rays after splitting an atom. However, instead of vaporizing the cat as the scientists feared, it transformed him into a superpowered feline that the scientists dubbed Atom the Cat.

Comments: I've seen a few sites claim his real name was Tom Cat. However, he's not called that in his origin issue, and once he gains his powers he seems to go exclusively by the name Atom. I suspect the attribution of the name Tom comes from the fact that the title was previously called Tom Cat and starred a character of that name, but that anthropomorphic feline was definitely not the same character.
